During Lockdown our usual supplies of secondhand books dried up, so for the last few months we focussed on adding remaindered titles (<a href="https://diplomatistbooks.blogspot.com/2021/02/">as we featured in a post last February</a>).</p><p>Well, I'm glad to say that we've now been able to get back to secondhand books. In a way this is more enjoyable for me - I don't know from week to week what I might find, and there's always the chance of something special coming along. I know that some of some of our regular customers feel the same.</p><p>But we're still adding remaindered books of course: - this week I ordered a restock of military history titles that had sold out or were running low (as well as some interesting-looking new ones!).</p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgVibAy7UA23vlaF6D0So6gb9WnErWIYP-prt9XMhkFoUc5mqAJqFx13962ja84hJyE-5DnvLps4Dq0FpocsUjX8GO-vnl6W_B8bI2MYV2ydkxzqYADQSU3GRz5iOU8LQx5OQUaqwlY9TFv/s640/wellington.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="640" data-original-width="480" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgVibAy7UA23vlaF6D0So6gb9WnErWIYP-prt9XMhkFoUc5mqAJqFx13962ja84hJyE-5DnvLps4Dq0FpocsUjX8GO-vnl6W_B8bI2MYV2ydkxzqYADQSU3GRz5iOU8LQx5OQUaqwlY9TFv/s320/wellington.jpg" /></a></div><br />1 May was the birthday of the 1st Duke of Wellington, so here's a picture of his statue here in Norwich and <b><a href="https://www.abebooks.com/collections/sc/military-history-napoleonic/2E5hHgtGKOpHpYQiBrkNS8?rec=false&cm_sp=collection-_-showmore-_-collections">a link to our titles on the Napoleonic Wars</a></b>.<p></p>Diplomatisthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04154642903216207181noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-773079615238279132.post-68856674291696895752021-03-24T06:19:00.000-07:002021-03-24T06:19:19.186-07:00Delivery Scams<p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgik8MQL3KaAspfjUU-an5GcIURnbQ1MRBliefrFALPhiZDBiC4Xbe8irsCJ9ZvKBXbJr-QkDB-s50Ou3DTqXIjOdb7lcYDI_7MyHP-tFTNn6ejPmjVTAvxzWiIpW4vqAzfmqaq7qi3ODyK/s275/scam.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="183" data-original-width="275" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgik8MQL3KaAspfjUU-an5GcIURnbQ1MRBliefrFALPhiZDBiC4Xbe8irsCJ9ZvKBXbJr-QkDB-s50Ou3DTqXIjOdb7lcYDI_7MyHP-tFTNn6ejPmjVTAvxzWiIpW4vqAzfmqaq7qi3ODyK/s0/scam.jpg" /></a></div><br />There is currently a scam doing the rounds where one gets a text out of the blue saying "your Royal Mail parcel is awaiting delivery. But it's not a great surprise either: the Franklin Expedition has an on-going fascination, and books on it and the many expeditions that set out in its wake always sell well.</p><p>So I thought I would use this post to point to our other books on the Arctic, which can be found in our <b><a href="https://www.abebooks.com/servlet/SearchResults?vci=61057945&vcat=History___of___Exploration&vcatn=History%20of%20Exploration">History of Exploration</a></b> section (which currently has over 90 titles) alongside books on the rest of the world. </p><p>There should be something there for everyone, so happy browsing!</p><p><br /></p>Diplomatisthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04154642903216207181noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-773079615238279132.post-65607238243735725242021-03-06T19:19:00.002-08:002021-03-07T02:57:48.202-08:00An Update - Feb 2021<p>I'm aware that this blog is very rarely updated, so I've decided to make an effort to improve that. First up is an update on what was happening with Diplomatist Books in February.</p><p>Due to the pandemic, most of our* usual sources for secondhand books have dried-up, but we've still been able to source new and remaindered books. </p><p>In February we added 115 new titles to our stock. We have at least as many waiting to be added in March. Unlike secondhand books, these tend to come in multiples, so that figure represents some 500-600 actual books. They cover all subjects: however, a significant number of them come from a German publisher, Kerber Verlag, and has increased our selection of <a href="https://www.abebooks.com/servlet/SearchResults?vci=61057945&vcat=Art___History&vcatn=Art%20History">art books</a> - with many more to come over the next few weeks.</p><p>As ever, all new titles have featured on our <a href="https://www.facebook.com/Diplomatist-Books-823366017679573">Facebook page</a> when they were listed.</p><p>In addition, we had an order with our wholesaler of military books that allowed us to restock a number of titles that had sold out in the last few months.</p><p>And it'll soon be time to get a new batch of postcards. At the moment the bookwhippet is the fore-runner.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi8NC5JwGhwdMQvfLrkvqlmveRvzHe192y937_IGvY3Zpcc-SKkvuYhtXKeOu-fJ3nLUoS33fYlRFnxZVY6ZxvEbn7Cf7DujEmSgmydfoueCVcq_xuub5Jl7dfqWup4fYsW72rSuSdZwybW/s762/bookwhippet.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="529" data-original-width="762" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi8NC5JwGhwdMQvfLrkvqlmveRvzHe192y937_IGvY3Zpcc-SKkvuYhtXKeOu-fJ3nLUoS33fYlRFnxZVY6ZxvEbn7Cf7DujEmSgmydfoueCVcq_xuub5Jl7dfqWup4fYsW72rSuSdZwybW/s320/bookwhippet.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><blockquote style="border: none; margin: 0px 0px 0px 40px; padding: 0px;"><p style="text-align: right;"><span style="font-size: x-small;"><br />* I'm not sure why I use the nosism, Diplomatist Books is actually 'me', but the editorial <i>we </i>always seems more appropriate.</span></p></blockquote>Diplomatisthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04154642903216207181noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-773079615238279132.post-54749912681552943142021-02-04T03:05:00.002-08:002021-02-04T03:05:48.541-08:00We're Still At It!<p>Despite all the issues with COVID and the worries caused by BREXIT, I'd like to reasure you that we're still at work. Given that we're based in the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Norwich">City of Norwich</a>, we've naturally always had a number of books on <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/East_Anglia">East Anglia</a>* in stock although that's not one of our specialisations. Until now there hasn't been a quick way of browsing them.<br />
<br />
Well now there is! <b><a href="https://www.abebooks.com/servlet/SearchResults?vci=61057945&vcat=East___Anglia&vcatn=East%20Anglia">Click here to have a look</a></b><br />

One of the ways it has sought to do this was to threaten to withdraw from the Universal Postage Union unless it was allowed to set its own fees for international mail shipped into the US, and to use this to penalise customers who have goods shipped in.<br />
<br />
<b>As a result, from 1 July 2020 there will be an increase of more than 100% in the fees the US Postal Service charges for 'last mile' delivery of international mail.</b><br />
<br />
<ul>
<li>For example, sending a small parcel of 750g-1kg by International Standard Rate (ie, untracked Air Mail) now costs £12.23. <b>From 1 July it will cost £17.75.</b> </li>
</ul>
<div>
We shall accordingly have to increase the shipping charges made to US customers. It appears that this will not affect International Ecomony (ie, Surface Mail with a delivery aim of 42 days) rates, and we will leave the charge for this service as is.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
We will not make the changes to our postal rates until July. If you are in the US and were thinking about ordering from us, you may wish to do so sooner rather than later.</div>

Over the last week I've added over two-dozen new titles to our <a href="https://www.abebooks.com/servlet/SearchResults?vci=61057945&vcat=Military___History_________Napoleonic&vcatn=Military%20History%20-%20Napoleonic">Napoleonic section</a>. Most (but not all!) of these were from the ever-popular Napoleonic Library series by Frontline Books*. <br />
<br />
If you follow us on Facebook you might** get a notification of new stock when we add it - as stock is added most days, it's worth signing up if you want to know what's new.<br />

Coming up this week: new books on <a href="https://www.abebooks.com/servlet/SearchResults?vci=61057945&vcat=Military___History_________WWII&vcatn=Military%20History%20-%20WWII">World War II</a> and I continue to plough through a collection on the <a href="https://www.abebooks.com/servlet/SearchResults?vci=61057945&vcat=History___of___Exploration&vcatn=History%20of%20Exploration">History of Exploration</a>.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Following the UK Government's announcement of a partial lock-down I've given some thought as to whether to continue trading. I will, <i>for the time being.</i></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<i><br /></i></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
My rational behind this is that I trade from home and running Diplomatist Books requires very little face-to-face interaction with others: I can minimise or remove that interaction, and therefore continue to operate within the announced restrictions without putting myself or others at risk. The Government is not yet asking that use of the postal system be minimised.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I shall keep this decision under review as events unfold and keep you up-dated.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<u><b>Handling Stock</b></u></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I shall wear gloves and mask when handling stock that is to be posted out to customers. <a href="https://diplomatistbooks.blogspot.com/2020/03/getting-virus-through-post-nope.html">See my earlier post about the longevity of the virus on different surfaces.</a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I shall not be buying new stock.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b><u>The Post Office</u></b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I shall no longer be visiting the Post Office, but instead using parcel drop-off points. Drop-offs will proably be every other day (subject to need).</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
As a result of this, <b>I will no longer be offering international customers the option of International Economy Rate</b> (ie, surface mail) as it is currently not possible to buy this on-line. International parcels will be sent using International Standard Rate.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b><u>Receiving Your Parcel</u></b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
During the current crisis, postal firms and courier firms will likely take longer to deliver your parcel. Please be patient and spare a thought for Post Office and courier firm workers. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Many of the parcels we ship are too big to put through a letterbox. So that postmen and couriers do not have to greet you face-to-face, you can enter a suggested safe parcel drop-off spot (e.g. “in the porch”, “in the garage”). We will no longer be sending parcels using 'signed for' services.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b><span style="font-size: large;">Keep Well Everyone!</span></b></div>

Nope.<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<br />
For those of you who want to stockpile books for your self-isolation, but are concerned that I may send you the Corona Virus with them, studies show that it only survives for about 24 hours on cardboard (and I therefore assume books). For the huge majority of you, this is longer than the books would take to get to you.<br />
<br />
I've also invested in a box of 500 latex gloves some of which which I shall wear while packaging.<br />
<br />

Last week was time to get another 500 postcards printed, and I decided to change the design. I think I still prefer the old one (the top card) for now, but I suspect that's just familiarity (and there are only two left, so it's moot!).<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
Given that our three best selling categories are <a href="https://www.abebooks.com/servlet/SearchResults?vci=61057945&vcat=Military___History_________WWII&vcatn=Military+History+-+WWII">the Second World War</a>, <a href="https://www.abebooks.com/servlet/SearchResults?vci=61057945&vcat=Military___History_________Biography&vcatn=Military+History+-+Biography">Military Biography</a> and <a href="https://www.abebooks.com/servlet/SearchResults?vci=61057945&vcat=Military___History_________Aviation&vcatn=Military+History+-+Aviation">Military Aviation</a> (with their obvious overlaps), I probably don't need to tell many of my readers of the significance of <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Britain">the Battle of Britain</a> to the courses of World War II and eventual Allied victory.<br />
<br />
Today is the start of Battle of Britain Week, culminating on the 15 September, which marks the climax of the battle. As well as commemorating the outcome and those from many nations who took part in the battle, the week forms the main fundraising drive for and charities such as the <a href="https://www.rafbf.org/">RAF Benevolent Fund</a> and <a href="https://www.rafa.org.uk/?gclid=CjwKCAjwrNjcBRA3EiwAIIOvqwQELk3Pm8sS469JGflF0q6_PXbH19UOUSF8X7VYLvnjLctNzdksUxoCq-sQAvD_BwE">the Royal Air Forces Association</a> which supports the 'RAF family' (serving members, veterans and their families). This year is particularly special as it also marks the centenary of the formation of the RAF in April 1918.<br />

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I've been meaning for some time to highlight the above series of books on the aviation aspects of the Normandy invasions by Martin Bowman. The anniversary of D-Day seems an excellent time to do so.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Sadly events have overtaken me and these volumes have proved popular even without the plug: although I have several copies of <i>Winged Pegasus and The Rangers</i>, I only have one full five-volume set left.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Bowman has written a similar series on Operation Market Garden. Of that set, I only have copies of Volume 1 and Volume 3. Time to restock soon, I think!</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
These, and other copies of Bowman's work (must-reads for anyone interested in World War II in the air) can be <span style="font-size: large;"><b><a href="https://www.abebooks.com/servlet/SearchResults?an=bowman&bi=0&ds=30&sortby=17&sts=t&vci=61057945">seen here</a></b></span>.</div>

Sometimes we get an e-mail from a customer that just makes our day. Yesterday was one of those times, and (with permission) we would like to share it with you.</div>
<br />
<blockquote>
Dear Edwin </blockquote>
<blockquote>
A few months ago you sent me the book <i>A Life in Secrets - the story of Vera Atkins and the lost agents of SOE</i> by Sarah Helm. It is an extraordinary tale of a brilliant, difficult and troubled woman's life and the researching of it must have involved heroic efforts. I thought you might like to know how I came to request it. </blockquote>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhyNw1XuTpRDDs_KPSSRfANd53AN_MSt6H66Z8zpJMWYRL_N7ABVhEzStfVdd4YYylLvgXcKNz_1RtDN-E4WQxyxPGDCfVxcM2gU-KqYFNjBO9fnCJYkep1fqWFev84L5Ru1lt18wZsVmI7/s1600/Atkins.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhyNw1XuTpRDDs_KPSSRfANd53AN_MSt6H66Z8zpJMWYRL_N7ABVhEzStfVdd4YYylLvgXcKNz_1RtDN-E4WQxyxPGDCfVxcM2gU-KqYFNjBO9fnCJYkep1fqWFev84L5Ru1lt18wZsVmI7/s320/Atkins.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<blockquote>
Attached is the photo of the tombstone of Vera Atkins sister-in-law Phoebe who was married to Vera's brother Guy. It is in the churchyard of St Senara's church in Zennor on the far west coast of Cornwall. I was there with a friend who was researching his family roots and I saw Phoebe's stone which made me smile and think she could have been a good woman to have known. I then found a memorial plaque set into one of the granite retaining walls to Guy and Vera Atkins mentioning that she had won the Croix de Guerre. I had recently read a superb history of life on a Zennor farm before and between the wars called Tremedda Days so I was interested in who had been living there and how they fitted in with the characters I had been reading about. Maybe this is why I Googled Phoebe Atkins when I got home. I found the instructions for her wake which was to be a big knees-up in Zennor village hall but not much more about her. However references brought me to Guy and Vera and hence to knowledge of this book. </blockquote>
<blockquote>
I couldn't have guessed what an incredible tale it would turn out to be and now I shall go back and salute all three of them. I'm sure that knowing Zennor and it's surroundings must have brought them much delight and respite after such turbulent lives. Thanks so much for your part in helping me travel down this path.</blockquote>

<br />
<br />
We now have a winner for our New Year competition.<br />
<br />
You will remember that the prize was a <a href="https://diplomatistbooks.blogspot.co.uk/p/there-are-many-benefits-for-both-us-as.html">Diplomatist Books' 2018 Membership</a>, giving 10% off the cost of orders. <br />
<br />
The questions we asked were:-<br />
<br />
<ul>
<li>Our spreadsheet tells us we have sold 1004 books in the UK. What is the total number including overseas sales (to the nearest 20)? <b><i><span style="color: red;">Answer - 1247.</span></i></b></li>
<li>To which non-English-speaking country have we sent most books? <b><i><span style="color: red;">Answer - Italy.</span></i></b></li>
</ul>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Unsurprisingly, nobody got the answers to these questions, so we went to Plan B and had a draw of the public followers of this blog.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><b>And the Winner is... Paul Smith!</b></span></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Paul, the e-mail I have for you is out-of-date. Please drop me a note so I can explain how the membership deal works.</div>
<div>

<div>
Why have we sent more books to Italy than to Spain or Germany (which are next on the list), or even Ireland? I don't know! Perhaps the subject for a future competition...</div>
